Neidpath Castle

Nestled on a hillside above the River Tweed, just outside the town of Peebles in the Scottish Borders, Neidpath Castle is a striking and romantic example of a medieval Scottish tower house. With origins dating back to the 12th century and much of the present structure built in the late 1300s, the castle has stood for centuries as a quiet witness to Scotland’s rich and often turbulent history.

Constructed from rugged stone and designed in an L-shaped layout, Neidpath retains much of its original character, from its thick defensive walls and narrow windows to its vaulted halls and hidden staircases. Unlike many castles that were heavily modernized, Neidpath remains remarkably untouched, offering a rare glimpse into authentic medieval life.

Over the centuries, the castle passed through several prominent Scottish families, including the Frasers, Hays, and Douglases, and even hosted notable figures such as Mary, Queen of Scots, who visited in 1563. Despite periods of neglect and damage—particularly during conflicts like Oliver Cromwell’s invasion—it has endured and been carefully preserved by later owners.

Today, Neidpath Castle is celebrated not only for its history but also for its enchanting setting. Surrounded by rolling countryside and overlooking the winding River Tweed, it feels like a hidden fairytale fortress—quiet, atmospheric, and steeped in centuries of stories, romance, and legend.
